Lifelong learning at Central Hall Commons hosts drumming circle

DOVER-FOXCROFT — Central Hall Commons is hosting a drumming circle on Thursday, Aug. 10 from 5:30-7 p.m. for anyone interested in being with others in rhythm play. The suggested donation is $5-10 but no one turned away. No experience is needed. Just bring your energy and desire to experience rhythm with others.

Some Djembes and other percussion instruments are available, but bring your own if you have one. Bring an 8- to 10-inch rubber pad if you have one, to stabilize the drum on the smooth floor. Basic instruction as needed. Dancers are welcome. Stay for the entire time period or only as you find comfortable.

For millennia around the world, drumming in community has been a way of building connections to others and to one’s own inner rhythms. Drumming with others can be energizing, healing, a form of communication and connection, part spiritual, part cultural, or just plain fun. Drumming has been used to celebrate the harvest season, marriages, circumcision ceremonies, and other life events. Many rhythms played with African drums originate from several West African countries and have been popularized in the West by African drummers such as Famadou Konate, Mamady Keita, Babatunde Olatunji, and others.

For people new to drumming, a few basics of Djembe play and Malinke rhythms can be taught and are easily learned. The conveners are not experts, just local folks who want to have fun with rhythm.
